MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Hoji is a Phoenix-based film photographer and technician working across natural light and studio environments. Focusing both commercial image-making and professional photo labs, work is centered on understanding light, exposure, and intentional decision-making for all steps along the way.
As an instructor, Hoji focuses on making photography feel accessible and welcoming, breaking down cameras, lighting, and studio tools into practical systems that photographers can truly use. His goal is to help students feel confident walking into a studio, setting up safely, and making images with purpose.

ABOUT THE CLASS
Photo + Lighting 101: Natural, Studio, and Harsh Light
This introductory workshop is for anyone who owns a camera, digital or film, and wants to actually understand how to use it. If you’ve been shooting on auto, guessing your settings, or avoiding certain dials altogether, this class is about bringing everything together in a way that finally clicks (get it lol).
Hosted at Afternoons Studio (Phoenix), the workshop focuses on learning to work with light as it exists: soft window light and backdrop setups inside the studio, controlled strobe lighting, and bright, high-contrast sunlight in the parking lot. Students will learn how aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and light all interact with each other, and how to make intentional choices instead of relying on chance. Along the way, we’ll introduce basic studio equipment, lighting modifiers, and essential safety practices, so photographers feel comfortable booking studio time and working independently. The goal is to understand and utilize your camera/equipment to the fullest potential.
No prior experience is required. Film cameras welcome (but check in with me to verify the camera pls)
Bring a journal!! Take notes :]
